Hey from Rob K. I retired from the Navy about nine months ago and followed my fiancé here to North Carolina. I am proud parent of five children(three from my first marriage and two from my fiancé). Since moving to North Carolina I have strived to adapt to civilian life and have started doing many things I have had a desire to try for a while but never given myself the opportunity to do so.
Like so…
Right before retiring from the Navy we decided we wanted a dog. After much debate we decided on a basset hound. We went to a breeder out in Zebulon, N.C., and one of the puppies picked us out.
So after 20 years of wanting a dog I now have one. Make no mistake dogs are hard work. House training this little guy has been a chore and a half. To be honest he is almost a year old I think if I did not make a concise effort to take him out every hour he would go all over the floor in heartbeat.
We are constantly on the lookout to make sure he stays healthy. Shots, vet visits and our newest concern fleas...I think we missed last month’s flea treatment. Oh, I almost forgot. We have to remember every month to give him his heart worm pill(got to pick up one on the way home from work).
He is a picky eater. About two months ago I accidentally got a different flavor of dog food and he about dropped 10 pounds in a 30 day period as he refused to eat the varied flavor of dog food. I was happily able to trade the remaining dog food for a free bath at the pet spa.
Despite all these challenges I love the little guy and he is part of our family. Having a dog is indeed a perk of civilian life.
